Ygueravide plays as Spain wins first round of women’s 3×3 series

Spain won the first leg of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) women’s 3×3 series of the 2021 season with a victory in Mies, Switzerland.

Sandra Ygueravide notched what turned out to be the winning points as Spain beat Poland 19-17 in the final at FIBA Headquarters.

Aitana Cuevas topped the final scoring with seven points and caught six rebounds.

But it was Ygueravide who was named MVP after collecting one of only two triple-fives in the entire tournament.

Ygueravide scored five points, six rebounds and six highlights as Spain finally took first place in the women’s 3×3 series after three second places in 2019.

Anna Pawlowska was another impressive performer as the Polish marked her debut in the Women’s 3×3 Series finishing top scorer with 32 points in six games.

Earlier today, Poland edged the Netherlands 16-15 in the quarter-final before beating Switzerland 16-12 in the semi-final.

Russia beat Romania 22-12 in another quarter-final clash to lose 21-10 to eventual winners Spain in the next round.

It was the first 3×3 Women’s Series event held since 2019 and the first official FIBA competition to be held at the organization’s headquarters in Switzerland.

Voiron in France will organize the next stage of the women’s 3×3 series from May 21 to 22.

Spain, the Netherlands, Hungary and Switzerland are expected to use the competition as a warm-up for the upcoming Olympic qualifying tournament, which will be held in Graz, Austria from May 26-30.

Romania, Mongolia and Russia have already qualified for Tokyo 2020, where 3×3 basketball is set to make its Olympic debut.
