Victor Wembanyama’s ceiling is very high

Victor Wembanyama took the NBA by surprise after his performance in Las Vegas, but some recognized his potential a long time ago. Fellow French international Nicolas Batum is one such player who has closely watched Wembanyama’s growth and potential to be one of the best of all time.

Batum reportedly said almost three years ago that Victor Wembanyama was going to be the future of the NBA. But Yahoo Sports‘ Chris Haynes didn’t believe him at the time, dismissing the youngster like any other prospect.

However, in a recent Yahoo Sports Q&AChris Haynes acknowledged his lack of judgment, and the LA Clippers forward added to that, saying:

“I know. I tried to warn you. I told you before anyone knew.

“Well, he defends like Rudy, he shoots and has the size of Kristaps Porziņģis, but he can run and play like Giannis [Antetokounmpo],” he added. “And I told you that three years ago, didn’t I? Did I lie?

Victor Wembanyama faced Scoot Henderson in back-to-back matches in Vegas, as both future prospects put in strong performances. The bag of skills and potential that Victor possesses is likely to push Henderson into the second choice, despite his preparation.

Rebuilding NBA teams have already begun looking at their options to onboard Wembanyama and are reportedly showing passion to make it happen. Teams like the San Antonio Spurs, Orlando Magic and Oklahoma City Thunder – to name a few – are sure to bet on Wembanyama and Henderson.

The French connection between Batum and Victor Wembanyama

Nicolas Batum was able to make such bold statements because he got to see Victor Wembanyama in action at a very young age. The first thing Batum noticed about Victor, aside from his build, was his ability to dribble the ball. Batum immediately called his ASVEL Basket partner/co-owner – Tony Parker – claiming he had seen the next one.

“I’m not saying he’s next for French basketball; he’s next for basketball. As for French basketball, you had me, [Evan] Fournier, [Rudy] Gobert. But when I say next, I mean the world of basketball,” Batum clarified. “The buzz for him is similar to Luka’s [Doncic] happened four years ago. It’s kind of the same hype.

What is even stranger is the maturity that Victor already possesses at 18 years old. Batum thinks Wembanyama knows what is expected of him to live up to the hype and said he doesn’t really need mentorship.

“We are there if he needs us. But he’s no ordinary 18-year-old. He has a 25-year-old mindset,” Batum said. “He just needs to prepare his body. He is still young physically. Mentally, he is there.

The attention Victor has garnered since his appearance in Vegas speaks to his potential in the league. Many NBA stars have recognized his game and Giannis Antetokounmpo even mentioned that he was preparing for Wembanyama’s arrival.
