USA fall to Argentina in AmeriCup semi-finals, 82-73 | Basketball

RECIFE, Brazil (AP) — USA Basketball will not repeat itself as AmeriCup champions.

Gabriel Deck scored 30 points, Nicolás Laprovittola added 18 and Argentina outscored the United States 82-73 in the semifinals on Saturday.

It was a rematch of the gold medal game of the last AmeriCup tournament in 2017, a game where the United States prevailed.

Not this time, not after Argentina beat the Americans – a team made up of players who have been in the G League or on international teams – 17-7 in the 4:59 final.

“Of course, a lot of credit to Argentina and (coach Pablo Prigioni). It’s a good team, a team of veterans, a lot of good players, a lot of different weapons and they did a great job. at the end,” USA coach Alex Jensen said. one more step and we’ve lost patience.”

Brazil and Canada were scheduled to play later Saturday in the other semifinal. The winner will meet Argentina on Sunday for the gold; the loser of that match will face the United States earlier on Sunday for bronze.

Norris Cole’s layup with 5:12 remaining gave the United States a 66-65 lead, but it would be the last lead for the Americans.

“It’s a good learning experience for our team,” Cole said. “And we will learn from it.”

Cole led the United States with 18 points and Zylan Cheatham added 10 for the Americans, who reached the line just 10 times, to Argentina’s 29.

Facundo Campazzo scored 10 for Argentina, which lost the 2017 AmeriCup Final to the United States 81-76. Argentina led for 33 of the game’s 40 minutes.
