Rockets, Mavericks NBA trade details: Christian Wood reportedly sold to Dallas

Luka Doncic is said to be another three-point threat to move on to next season.

According to multiple reports, the Dallas Mavericks have acquired center Christian Wood as part of a deal from the Houston Rockets. The Rockets reportedly sent Wood to the Mavericks in exchange for Boban Marjanovic, Sterling Brown, Trey Burke, Marquese Chriss and the No. 26 pick in the 2022 NBA draft.

Mavericks-Rockets NBA Trade Details

  • Mavericks receive: christian wood
  • The rockets receive: Boban Marjanovic, Sterling Brown, Trey Burke, Marquese Chriss, 2022 first-round picks (26th overall)

After a surprising playoff streak that saw them advance to the Western Conference Finals, the Mavericks are looking to remain a major player in the West with the acquisition of Wood.

The 26-year-old, 6-foot-11 big man averaged a double-double last season, averaging 17.9 points and 10.1 rebounds in 30.8 minutes per game for the Rockets. Wood is a legitimate stretch four as he shot 39% on three on 4.9 attempts per game last season.

With Wood seemingly on their roster, the Mavericks now have another 3-point threat that would fit perfectly with coach Jason Kidd’s five-out offensive plans, which created space for Doncic to operate and create Luka’s magic. .

Defense, however, is not Wood’s forte as he is not powerful enough to hit with low crosses and is not fast enough to keep up with nimble power forwards. Still, Kidd managed to make Dallas one of the best defensive teams in his first season and perhaps being in a more responsible system will force Wood to progress on the defensive side of the floor.

Also for the Mavericks, this reported trade helped free up space on their roster as they were able to offload non-rotational players and pick up a talented but flawed player in return.

For the Rockets, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, the reported deal allows Houston to give rising forward Alperen Sengun more playing time and draft a big, potentially hard-hitting impact to Paolo Banchero or Chet Holmgren with the no. #3 overall in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Salary-wise, Wood is on an expiring deal and all of the players the Mavericks have traded to the Rockets are also on expiring deals. So essentially the two teams were able to get a deal without having to add any long-term wages.

The Mavericks’ potential starting lineup

With the announced addition of Wood, Dallas could start a very formidable starting lineup and have significant depth on their bench. Of course, it remains to be seen if Dallas will re-sign versatile combo guard Jalen Brunson, but if they retain his services, here’s a look at potential starters and key players for the Mavericks next season:

  • Luka Doncic
  • Reggie Bullock
  • Dorian Finney Smith
  • christian wood
  • Dwight Powell
  • Sixth man: Jalen Brunson
  • Key reservations: Spencer Dinwiddie, Maxi Kleber, Tim Hardaway Jr.

On paper, Wood may not seem to be moving the needle much for the Mavericks. But with Doncic’s continued superstar growth, the sky’s the limit for the Mavs and Wood has the skills that can help sustain the All-Star guard game and at the same time keep Dallas in the top echelon of the Western Conference.
