Punjab scores easy wins in senior basketball championship: the Tribune India

Hosts from Punjab scripted easy wins in the men’s and women’s sections on the opening day of the 71st North Zone Senior Basketball Championship on Monday at Guru Nanak Stadium.

Reigning national champions, the men of Punjab made the minced meat of their opponents from Jammu and Kashmir they crushed 108-37 while their counterparts (women) emerged victorious against Himachal Pradesh hands down (64-11).

The Punjab players dominated the proceedings and gave their rivals no chance to settle down. The Punjabi men started their campaign on a high note as they took an early lead, which they managed to hold until the long whistle.

Hosts with international stars in their ranks faced a small challenge from the players of Jammu and Kashmir. On the winning side, Gurbaj Singh scored up to 21 points for his team to solve the problem comfortably.

Earlier today, the women of Punjab got off to a good start and ran to an easy victory over Himachal Pradesh. Ritika and Manmeet were the main architects of the victory, with 18 and 9 points respectively, while Rupal was the lone fighter of the losers, scoring five points.

In another match in the women’s section, Delhi outscored Haryana 83-51 in which the winning team’s main contributors were international player Raspreet Kaur Bharti, who lost 18 points and Bharti scored 13 points.

On the losing side, Ritika and Tarvinder scored 12 and 11 points respectively to close the gap.

However, in the men’s section, the Haryana dominated Delhi 84-64 to avenge the defeat of their counterparts. For Haryana, Sunil scored 13 points and he was ably helped by Joginder, who scored 12 points. On the losing side, Manik was the top scorer with 18 points and Jai Parkash contributed 15 points.

Varinder Kumar Sharma, deputy commissioner, and Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, police commissioner, jointly opened the championship.

Yurinder Singh Hayer, former IG, and Teja Singh Dhaliwal, respectively chairman and honorary secretary general of the Punjab Basketball Association, JP Singh, chairman of the District Basketball Association, and other officials associations, in addition to the local administration and police officials, including J Elanchezhian, co-police commissioner, Parminder Singh, ADCP, City, Gagnesh Kumar, former international basketball player and SP, Jalandhar, the Professor Rajinder Singh, Brij Bhushan Goyal and Paramvir Bhogal were also present on the occasion.
