Men’s basketball debuts 2021-22 at Monday’s exhibition

CULLOWHEE, North Carolina – West Carolina fans can get their first glimpse of the 2021-22 Catamount men’s basketball team Monday night as WCU hosts Campbellsville-Harrodsburg at Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center for an exhibition competition at 19 ‘o clock.

Admission to the competition between Pioneers and Catamounts is free with general admission seats, except for floor seats and specially marked spots. Doors open at 6 p.m. with a clear bag policy in the effort. Monday’s exhibition competition is first for new WCU head coach Justin gray, who became the 19th head coach in program history in April after Mark Prosser’s departure for Winthrop. Gray, who had a very successful playing career at Wake Forest and spent a dozen years playing professionally at the international level, assisted Winthrop to the Big South Conference 2020-21 title as well as an appearance in the NCAA tournament. Gray selected longtime college basketball coach Jayson gee as his associate head coach and has counted Brian Graves and Zack Freeman as assistant coaches to complete his inaugural team at Cullowhee.

Familiar faces returning for the Catamounts include the juniors Tyler harris and Travion McCray who have the most field experience in a WCU uniform. These two are flanked by sophomores Josh massey and Brad Halvorsen who also return from the previous season. An athletic forward, Harris played in all 27 games and averaged 6.3 points while McCray started nine of 13 games played in points and averaged just over nine points per game.

Joining the Catamounts this season is a mix of junior college transfers, graduate transfers and real freshmen. WCU brought four junior college transfers, including third-team NJCAA All-America Marvin Prize (Salt Lake CC) and honorable mention NJCAA All-America selection Vonterius Woolbright (Lawson State CC), with Marlow Gilmore (Dodge City CC) and Madison Monroe (CC independence).

Junior red shirt Joe petrakis arrived in Cullowhee after playing for Big 12 member Kansas State in 11 games last season, while the transfer graduates Cam Bacote joined the Indiana State Catamounts. Also among the transfers from Division I is a graduate student Nicolas robinson who headed south from Valparaiso to the guard post.

A pair of freshmen in Marcus Banks (Hampton, Virginia) and KJ Odor began their college career at WCU with the arrival of Banks after completing his prep career at Fork Union Military Academy and Odor at Spire Academy in Ohio after moving to the United States from Kisumu, Kenya.

Campbellsville-Harrodsburg, a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), opened its season at the Champion Classic hosted by Champion Christian College last weekend. The Pioneers just finished a 12-11 season a year ago.

WCU opens the 2021-22 regular season at home on Tuesday, November 9, hosting Bowling Green at 7:30 p.m. in the second half of a doubles program with the women’s basketball team, which opens its season against Emory & Henry at 4. : 00h00
