Matthew Smith hired as assistant men’s basketball coach

ITHACA, NY – Ithaca College Men’s Basketball Head Coach Walid Farid announced the hiring of its new assistant, Matthew Smith, for the next season 2022-23. Smith officially began his Ithaca appointment on August 1.

Smith arrives at South Hill after spending the past two seasons at Brockport College. The Golden Eagles went 18-8 last winter with a second-round appearance in the SUNYAC Tournament.

In 2019-20, Smith was an assistant at St. Joseph’s University on Long Island, and prior to that he was Director of Basketball Operations and Head Coach at Five Star Sports in Beijing, China from 2017 to 2019.

Smith graduated from Brockport in May 2017 with a degree in criminal justice and a minor in forensic science. He also completed his Masters in Sports Administration at Brockport in May 2022.

Smith was a three-year player (2015-2017) at Brockport where he played 78 games throughout his Golden Eagle career.

Smith graduated from Northport High School on Long Island, where he started college basketball for three years. Smith served as team captain for Northport’s Long Island Championship in 2013. Smith was named All-Tournament MVP, as well as All-Conference and All-League during his senior season.
