Lady Buffs wraps up preseason at The Pit in Albuquerque

CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs wrap up their preseason schedule Saturday afternoon as they head to Albuquerque, New Mexico for exhibition action against the New Mexico Lobos with a denunciation scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT at The Pit.

2021-22 RECAP
Josh Prock guided the Lady Buffs to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in his first season at Maroon & White, finishing the campaign with an overall record of 26-11 as WT won the regular season and championship titles. LSC tournament, followed by a run to the South Central Regional Championship at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.

A LOOK AT THE LOBOS
UNM enters the season with high expectations by returning seven winners of an NIT women’s team a year ago. Shaiquel McGruder was named an All-Mountain West Conference preseason selection as well as one of 25 players on the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Watch List.

McGruder, a senior from Trotwood, Ohio, averaged 14.2 points per game as she went 219 of 360 (60.8%) from the floor, including 13 of 45 (28.9%) from deep and 61 of 80 (76.3%) from the free throw line to go along with 258 rebounds (100 offensive, 158 defensive), 32 assists, 66 steals and 49 blocks. She led Mountain West in field goal percentage while scoring double figures in 25 games with seven games with 20+ points.

The Lobos finished the 2021-22 campaign with a 26-10 overall record with a 14-4 mark in Mountain West Conference action, advancing to the third round of the Women’s NIT. UNM picked up playoff home victories over Grandy Canyon and San Diego before falling to Oregon State (78-73) in Corvallis, Oregon.

New Mexico takes on Fort Lewis College in exhibition action on Thursday, Nov. 3 before hitting the road to open the regular season against Southern Utah on Monday, Nov. 7.

UNM HEAD COACH MIKE BRADBURY
Mike Bradbury is entering his seventh season as head coach of the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team. In his previous six seasons at the helm, Bradbury guided the Lobos to a 120-65 (.649) overall record. Three times during his tenure (2017-18, 2018-19, and 2021-22), the Lobos eclipsed the 20-win mark, with the Lobos tying the program record for most wins in a single season with 26 in 2021-22.

The Lobos have enjoyed sustained success under Bradbury, with the program setting several program records during the 2021-22 season. UNM set the program record in three-pointers (346), a season-best three-pointer program of 171, as well as a program record of 596 assists on the season and 292 in conference games. Additionally, the Lobos made a conference-record 523 field goals and scored the most conference points in program history with 1,413 points.

THE SERIES
Saturday afternoon marks the seventh all-time hardwood meeting between the Lobos and Lady Buffs. The series is tied at 3-3 since the Lady Buffs have won the last three meetings of a series that dates back to 1980. The last meeting between the two teams dates back to November 22, 1985 in Canyon (82-65). WT is 0-1 all-time at The Pit in Albuquerque.

WT HEAD COACH JOSH PROCK
Josh Prock enters his second season at the helm of the Lady Buff Basketball program after guiding WT to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in his first season at Maroon & White, ending the campaign with an overall record of 26-11 as WT has won the LSC Regular Season and tournament titles followed by a run at the South Central Regional Championship.

Prock was introduced as the head coach of West Texas A&M women’s basketball on June 2, 2021. Prock is no stranger to the Lone Star Conference as he spent eight seasons as head coach at East New -Mexico leading the Greyhounds to their only three NCAA Tournament appearances. in the program history.

THE SOFTNESS OF HOME
West Texas A&M is home to one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the nation, as the First United Bank Center has been the home of the Lady Buffs since Jan. 26, 2002. The Lady Buffs are an impressive 260-37 inside FUBC during that period for a winning clip of 87.5%. WT has averaged 1,032 fans per contest since the facility opened with the biggest crowd coming on opening night with 4,941 Buff Nation members seeing the Lady Buffs take on rival Abilene Christian.

LSC BASKETBALL PRESEASON SURVEY
The Lady Buffs garnered 31 of 39 possible first place votes for a total of 612 points to sit atop the poll, followed by Lubbock Christian (first four places, 557), Texas Woman’s (first four places, 538) , Angelo State (519), UT Tyler (479), Texas A&M-Kingsville (408), Texas A&M International (371), Cameron (347), Midwest State (314), Eastern New Mexico (233), St Edward’s (219), UAFS (216), UT Permian Basin (172), Oklahoma Christian (154), St. Mary’s (94) and Western New Mexico (71).

The 2022-23 LSC basketball schedule will feature 16 women’s teams split into two divisions. Each team will play a dual round robin schedule within their division. Additionally, the teams will play eight crossover competitions against teams from the opposite division for a total of 22 conference games.

The LSC Basketball Championships will feature an 8-team field in 2023 with seeding based on all 22 conference games. Division winners will receive the top two seeds of the tournament. The championships are scheduled to take place on March 2, 3, 4 and 5, 2023 at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.

HOUSE OF CHAMPIONS
West Texas A&M is home to one of the most successful athletic programs in all of NCAA Division II.

The 2021-22 campaign has seen WT claim six Lone Star Conference Championships, three LSC Tournament crowns, two Regional Championships and four top-5 finishes in track and field, including the division’s Women’s National Outdoor Track and Field Championship. II of the NCAA.
