HALFMOON, NY – A big third quarter saw Kingston High pull away from Fox Lane on Wednesday as the Tigers won 59-47 in the Shen / Impact Holiday Classic men’s basketball tournament.
Ke’montae Thawe scored 20 points, Ryan McCardle scored five 3-point field goals en route to a 17-point performance, Elijah Abrams scored 10 and Kevin Andrade added eight to lead the Tigers.
“It was a good win in a tough environment,” said Kingston coach Ron Kelder, referring to the new Impact Athletic Center, an AAU facility with several adjacent pitches.
Kijngston, now 3-1, was scheduled to play against St. Anthony’s of Long Island on Thursday.
“The first half, we let the advances slip away. I think we were leading eight (22-14) in the first half, ”said Kelder. “A few bad turnovers, a few bad shots that we shouldn’t have taken with the shot clock down gave them a bucket.”
Kingston managed to maintain a 22-19 halftime advantage. The adjustments marked a 23-13 third quarter that strengthened the Tigers’ leadership.
“We changed our defense a bit, put a bit of pressure, tried to change the pace of the game and we scored more points in the third quarter than the whole first half,” Kelder said.
Justin Allen (nine points, 12 rebounds, four assists), Matt Toscano (10 points, five assists, four rebounds) and Niko Dent (10 points) set the pace for Fox Lane.
“It’s a man-to-man team trying to be physical with you in there,” Kelder said. “They did a good job on us for a while, but I think we changed the tempo and got the playing in our favor.”
