Gilas 3×3 keeps an eye on the future

GILAS Pilipinas 3×3 winless in Fiba 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament is a huge learning experience as the country is looking to make it onto the world stage soon.

“We will come back to Manila with the belief that over time we will be able to compete with the best countries in the world,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) program director for 3×3 Ronnie Magsanoc.

Joshua Munzon, CJ Perez, Mo Tautuaa and Santi Santillan went winless in Pool C and lost all four of their games in Graz, Austria.

The Filipinos suffered a tough 21-12 loss to Qatar and a 21-11 loss to the world number one. 3 Slovenia on Wednesday before playing the sans Tautuaa on Friday and tasting 22-11 humiliation at the hands of the Dominican Republic ahead of a narrow 15-14 decision against France.

It was the first time the Philippines men’s 3×3 team had been excluded from international competition.

Magsanoc, however, believes the Filipinos are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to 3×3 basketball.

“Time and preparation are key. Constant international exposure will certainly add resistance and preparation for our national Gilas 3×3 players once we compete in the top level Fiba 3×3 competitions in the coming year,” did he declare.

Magsanoc also believes the formation of the 3×3 PBA league will be a boost as the SBP plans to build a pool out of this generation of players.

“The 3×3 PBA will also be a great long-term help in creating an avenue for year-round competition for our 3×3 specialists,” he said.

The soft-spoken mentor is optimistic about what the future holds, especially with the Philippines eager to defend their throne at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, and compete in the Asian Games of 2022 in Hangzhou, China.

“These are the next two international tournaments that we hope to play as we continue to build and solidify the SBP’s national program for 3×3 basketball,” said Magsanoc.
