Columbia Again Hosts State High School Basketball Tournaments | High school sports

COLUMBIA — Columbia will once again host state high school basketball tournaments beginning in the 2023-24 school year, the city announced Wednesday.

The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) announced the host communities on Wednesday.

The basketball championships will be played in Colombia during the 2027-2028 school year.

The Boys Wrestling Championships, Cross Country Championships and State Music Festival will continue to be held in Colombia throughout the 2028-2029 school year.

“The ability to host these MSHSAA events is so important to our tourism industry, which is a vital local economic engine,” said Amy Schneider, director of the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). “Our entire community understands the importance of bringing these students to Colombia and has come together to help support these proposals.”

CVB said the cross-country proposal was submitted in partnership with the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department. The championship was held at Gans Creek Recreation Area.

The music festival proposal was submitted in partnership with the University of Missouri School of Music, while the men’s basketball and wrestling proposals were submitted in partnership with Mizzou Athletics.

“Projects like these MSHSAA offerings show the importance of local partnerships in achieving great things,” said Columbia City Manager De’Carlon Seewood. “We look forward to welcoming students and fans from across Missouri to these events.”

The 2022-2023 school year will be the last of the football championships held in Colombia, unless it is extended.
