Players from here and elsewhere go to Zoo Lake to enjoy the basketball courts. An added bonus is that Zoo Lake’s basketball courts were recently revamped thanks to the Hennessy International Hidden Court campaign.

At the exclusive unveiling event held at Zoo Lake in Parkview, attendees enjoyed music, dancing, games, basketball games and Hennessy drinks.

Event MC, TV host Kim Jayde says cognac distiller Hennessy has been working with the National Basketball Association for two years now and was on a mission that day to unveil the iconic courts in collaboration with graphic designer Sindiso ‘Riot’ Nyoni. She added that the courts are there for the community to enjoy for as long as possible.

Co-MC, rapper and TV host Siyabonga Ngwekazi, also known as ‘Scoop Makhathini’, added, “It can benefit people who don’t even drink Hennessy, sports people and the support community in his outfit”.

Community Development MMC Ronald Harris thanked everyone including Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, the Executive Mayor, Zoo Lake Users Committee and Hennessy for this great project.

We believe that this ground will be used for the development of basketball in South Africa. Basketball and other sports are an economic driver for young people. I hope that when we cut this ribbon, Johannesburg’s golden star will shine and this dream will come true.

On behalf of the Zoo Lake Users Committee, General Manager Fran Haslam said the newly renovated basketball court will definitely put the Zoo Lake basketball courts in a different league and on the map in terms of international exposure. “We are flattered and honored that our court is the first in Africa. What an honor and privilege.

“We are very grateful to Hennessy for their generosity. They were certainly a very professional team putting everything together and we so appreciate all the help, initiative and support we received from them. A slam dunk for the city of Johannesburg and the most unifying sport in the world”.
