Bay Area News Group Athlete of the Week: Derek Sangster, Mitty basketball

Archbishop Mitty, basketball star Derek Sangster, was named the Bay Area News Group male athlete of the week from Dec. 13-19 after receiving 41.17% of the vote before the 5 p.m. deadline on Wednesday.

Menlo school footballer Alessandro Velasquez finished second and Bellarmine basketball player Nick Corbett finished third.

Congratulations to all applicants for this week’s recognition.

Sangster, a 6-foot-7-inch junior, had 21 points and 10 rebounds as Mitty raised his record to 4-1 with a 63-32 victory over Menlo-Atherton.

The Monarchs are ranked # 2 in the latest Bay Area News Group Top 25.
