The Los Angeles Lakers entered free agency with the need to form a whole new roster around their big three, Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis and LeBron James, while under heavy financial restrictions on the salary cap. The result was a flurry of moves in the first 24 hours and a staggering number of value contracts the Lakers landed free agents on.
Landing like Malik Monk and Kent Bazemore on minimum contracts and Kendrick Nunn on just part of the mid-level taxpayer exception were all deals that were below market value.
With that in mind, the latest episode of “Can U Dig It” – a Silver Screen and Roll podcast – with hosts Jacob Rude and Christian Rivas explores the NBA’s biggest free agency winners and losers, players to teams and debating where the Lakers fall into this conversation.
But before they do that, they recap a wild first Las Vegas Summer League game that saw Austin Reaves’ late retirement cap on a Lakers comeback to take out the Suns. Mac McClung and Devontae Cacok’s solid play left them wondering if either could also be on the line for one of the bottom spots on the Lakers’ roster.
Then the two give their reactions and thoughts on the Lakers’ free agency and why they should be considered one of the winners of the period. They then look at the new home of two former Lakers at Alex Caruso and Lonzo Ball and the Bulls and discuss how they both believe in what Chicago does.
They also take a look at free agency’s biggest loser, Dennis Schröder, and discuss how things went so wrong and if there is some form of happy ending to his free agency nightmare at the horizon.
